Dianna Cannon loves practicing disability law. She has done so for the past 30 years. During that time, she has won thousands of disability claims. She has also won disability claims under the Black Lung Act, before the Railroad Retirement Board, and the Veteran’s Administration.
She is a sustaining member of the National Organization of Social Security Claimant’s Representatives. Ms. Cannon is a member of the Board of Trustees for the S. J. Quinney College of Law at the University of Utah. She is also an adjunct professor for the law school, where she teaches Disability Law. Recently, her colleagues voted for her inclusion in Utah’s Legal Elite in Utah Business Magazine. In 2019, Thomson Reuters published Dianna Cannon’s book, Social Security Disability Claims, Volumes 1 & 2. Her book is an attorney’s guide to practicing Social Security Disability law.
Much to Ms. Cannon’s dismay, she is not the famous actress Dyan Cannon. It would be wonderful to be a movie star and get to know Willie Nelson in Honeysuckle Rose. Sadly, Ms. Cannon’s life is not that glamorous. However, once when she called a client on the phone, a family member picked up and asked who she was. She said she was Dianna Cannon. She then heard the phone drop and the person who answered ran through the house screaming excitedly, “Mom, it is for you and it is Dyan Cannon!”
Ms. Cannon’s interest in disability law began during law school. At that time, few firms were representing individuals with disabilities. Ms. Cannon knew this was an important area of the law, because disability cuts across all social categories. For example, it doesn’t matter if you are rich or poor or what your skin color is, you can have a disability. Likewise, disability can impact your life no matter your gender, age, or education level. She knew law firms should help those with disabilities. Applicants need help, because the SSA makes it difficult to obtain SSD benefits.
In order to fight government agencies like the SSA, you need a lawyer. This means clients who can’t work due to disability, need to hire an attorney. And, they need to do it without coming up with a lot of money. Cannon Disability Law was born to help those seeking disability benefits. Since then, her firm has won over $100 million in client’s past-due and ongoing disability benefits.
