Harriet Newman Cohen, known as the "doyenne" of matrimonial and family law attorneys in New York City, is a founding partner of Cohen Stine Kapoor LLP, a dynamic post-pandemic matrimonial and family law firm that launched on January 1, 2021. She has partnered with Martha Cohen Stine, her daughter, and Ankit Kapoor, her fellow alumnus, albeit two generations her junior. The new firm’s partners span three generations of lawyers.

 

Ms. Cohen was the subject of a feature profile written by Michael Y. Park for New York Super Lawyers, entitled, "The Second Life of Harriet Cohen, What the Matrimonial Lawyer Learned to Share with the World." With this launch of her new law firm, Ms. Cohen enters her “Third Life” – her post-pandemic professional life.  Ms. Cohen was also profiled by Brooklyn Law School in an article entitled, "Harriet Cohen '74, The Marriage Broker."

 

On February 7, 2020, Ms. Cohen was honored by Brooklyn Law School as “Alumna of the Year.” On December 11, 2017, the New York County Lawyers Association honored Ms. Cohen at its annual dinner celebrating "Outstanding Women in the Legal Profession."

 

For 12 years, Ms. Cohen has been listed as one of the “TOP 50 Female Lawyers” by New York Metro Super Lawyers, 2009-2021.  This list recognizes "the women lawyers who received the highest point totals in the New York Super Lawyers-Metro Edition nomination, research and blue ribbon review process." Ms. Cohen is also recognized as one of the “TOP 100 Lawyers” (men and women), New York Metro Super Lawyers, 2010-2021. Super Lawyers honored Ms. Cohen’s former matrimonial law firm as one of the “50 Law Firms Professionals Should Know About,” based on the high ratings of all of the firm’s lawyers.

 

Throughout her professional career, Ms. Cohen has been awarded the highest AV® Preeminent™ rating (5 out of 5) by Martindale and Hubbell, the nationally recognized legal directory, signifying the highest rating for legal ability and professional standards of conduct and ethics.

 

A graduate of Barnard College (B.A. cum laude) (Latin major; Music minor) Bryn Mawr College (M.A. in Latin) and Brooklyn Law School (J.D. cum laude), Ms. Cohen, when at law school, was an editor of the Brooklyn Law Review.

 

Ms. Cohen represents celebrities and other high net worth individuals, as well as other worthy clients. Ms. Cohen has represented Gov. Andrew Cuomo, the former wives of the Weinstein brothers, NBA star Paul George, Howard Stern’s former wife (Alison), Laurence Fishburne, Ute Lemper, Linda Lavin, among other celebrities.

 

In addition, Ms. Cohen is frequently appointed by the court to represent children in contested family law matters and as a neutral evaluator to assist the court in bringing contested matters to settlement.

 

Ms. Cohen was one of the authors of the equitable distribution law, served on the Child Support Commission of the State of New York and served on the Foster Care Commission of the City of New York. Ms. Cohen was President of the New York Women's Bar Association and has been a member of the New York State Supreme Court, Civil Branch, New York County, Matrimonial Mediation Subcommittee since 2019. Ms. Cohen is a member of the Executive Committee of the Family Law Section of the New York State Bar Association. In 2021, Ms. Cohen was selected to serve on the Matrimonial Law Committee of the Bar Association of the City of New York.

 

Ms. Cohen served as a Member of the President’s Advisory Council of Brooklyn Law School. In April, 2019, she spoke on a Panel sponsored by Brooklyn Law School on, "Diversity and Inclusion in Law Firms," a program moderated by Justice Rosalyn Richter of the First Department Appellate Division of the State of New York.

 

Ms. Cohen is the alumna president of her class at her alma mater, Barnard College. Ms. Cohen serves on the Board of the New York City Opera; Ms. Cohen, a former pianist, also serves on the Board of the Stecher and Horowitz Foundation, whose flagship programs are The New York International Piano Competition and The Young Artists Series. The S&H Foundation furthers the education, recognition, and fostering of talented young pianists from around the world, thereby sustaining and preserving the essence of our cultural life through audience development and community involvement. Ms. Cohen sits on the Board of Directors of the Lotos Club, founded by a group of literati including Mark Twain, one of the oldest literary clubs in the United States, and she is Chair of its Music Committee.  Ms. Cohen was awarded a Medal of Merit, the Lotos Club’s highest award, for her outstanding contributions to the Club.

 

Ms. Cohen is dedicated to the practice of law in the finest tradition, zealously representing her clients and making herself available to promote reform in the law by authoring informative legal articles and sharing her knowledge and experience in the law with the Governor, the Legislature and the Courts.
