Peter Caltagirone is an Alaska attorney and pilot. Licensed in five states, Peter is an experienced trial attorney with over a decade of legal experience representing a wide spectrum of clients from individuals to publicly traded companies. Peter has litigation experience in multiple practice areas from oil and gas, mining, complex commercial litigation, large loss property subrogation, breach of contract, land use, and tort liability.
During his years in Alaska, Peter served as Assistant Attorney General at the Alaska Department of Law. In that capacity, he represented the Alaska Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and Department of Revenue (DOR) in high-stakes oil and gas-related litigation and daily advice. Issues included royalty, permitting, leasing, unitization, property tax, and production tax. Peter also served as lead counsel to DNR on development of AKLNG, wildfire litigation, matters involving mitigation and abatement of derelict vessels, along with advice on proposed legislation and regulation changes.
After a brief tenure serving as Legal and Regulatory Affairs Manager for the Alaska Oil & Gas Association, DNR Commissioner Corri Feigi recruited Peter to join her leadership team as Senior Legal & Policy Advisor at the beginning of Governor Dunleavy’s administration. In that capacity, Peter took a lead role in DNR’s due diligence and approvals related to the 2019-2020 Hilcorp acquisition of BP’s Alaska assets, developed and supervised a team that assisted and advised the Commissioner in the adjudication of a backlog of administrative appeals, adjudicating over 100 appeals in two years, a record, that covered the full breadth of DNR’s jurisdiction. Peter also advised on and helped implement policy throughout DNR, in its litigation, and helped craft legislative proposals for the agency.
Before moving to Alaska, Peter was in private practice handling complex litigation throughout Southern California and the East Coast. After graduating from Villanova University School of Law with top honors in trial practice, Peter began his practice at the Philadelphia headquarters of international law firm Cozen O’Connor. Before attending law school, Peter was a jury consultant in Los Angeles under the pioneer of juror selection science, Dr. Donald Vinson.
In his spare time, Peter is an advocate for general aviation in Alaska. He is a licensed private pilot with seaplane and instrument ratings. In 2019, Peter was selected from among his peers into the Alaska Journal of Commerce Top Forty under 40 alumni.
